It is the sub-capital of the Yonne department in north-central France. It is located 110 km southeast of Paris on the Yonne River. It has a population of 26,904 (1999). It has early Gothic and Renaissance architecture, including the Cathedral of Saint-Étienne, which dates back to almost the 12th century, and a museum with a wealth of medieval and ancient artefacts. It produces agricultural machinery, railway carriages, bricks and biscuits. It also has a bronze foundry. It is an ancient city, and in ancient times was one of the most important cities in the Roman province of Gaul, called Agedincum.
