Lesage - Alain-René Lesage

Lesage - Alain-René Lesage

French playwright and author. Born in Sarzeau in Brittany. After attending a local Jesuit school, he went to Paris in 1690. His literary start was adapting Spanish literature. His breakthrough came with the play Crispin le le été (1707), based on a work by Hurtado de Mendoza, and his subsequent comedy Churcare (1709) was a huge hit. Inspired by Spanish literature, he showed enthusiasm for novels as well as plays, and wrote the genre novel La limp d'état (1707), which achieved some success.

However, it is his four-volume novel The Story of Gilles Brasse (published between 1715 and 1735) that has made Lesage's name immortal today. The novel borrows its structure from Spanish picaresque novels, but the detailed portrayal of the protagonist Gilles Brasse's personal growth through the various incidents he encounters in life, his several job changes, and other events, can be seen as a link to later literary novels.
