A region in southwestern France. It is a historical place name centered on the Aquitaine Basin, and its area has changed over time. Currently, it refers to the departments of Dordogne, Gironde, Landes, Lot-et-Garonne, and Pyrénées-Atlantiques. In ancient Roman times, it was Aquitania, a region of Gaul, and at that time it referred to the area between the Pyrenees and the Garonne River. It became a British territory in 1152, but became part of France in 1453. From this time on, it was called Guyenne. It is centered on agriculture and livestock breeding.
