A region in southwestern France. It is a historical place name centered on the Aquitaine Basin, and its area has changed over time. Currently, it refers to the departments of Dordogne, Gironde, Landes, Lot-et-Garonne, and Pyrénées-Atlantiques. In ancient Roman times, it was Aquitania, a region of Gaul, and at that time it referred to the area between the Pyrenees and the Garonne River. It became a British territory in 1152, but became part of France in 1453. From this time on, it was called Guyenne. It is centered on agriculture and livestock breeding. Industry is generally sluggish, but it produces oil and natural gas, and the aircraft and weapons industries are developing. It is famous for wine, oyster farming, foie gras, and truffles. The center is Bordeaux.
