Minerals usually have a unique crystal shape determined by their crystal structure, but in exceptional cases, they may show a crystal shape unique to other minerals, which is called a pseudomorph of the original mineral. Examples of pseudomorphs include polymorphic pseudomorphs (when a polymorphic transformation occurs, such as between quartz and tridymite), replacement pseudomorphs (when the composition of a crystal changes, such as between pyrite and limonite), voids (when the contents of another crystal have dissolved and become empty), and filled pseudomorphs (when an empty crystal is filled).

鉱物は普通その結晶構造に規定される固有の結晶形を示すが，例外的に他種の鉱物に固有の結晶形を示す場合があり，これをもとの鉱物の仮像という。多形仮像（多形転移をした場合で，たとえば石英とトリディマイト），交代仮像（結晶の成分変化が起こった場合で，たとえば黄鉄鉱と褐鉄鉱），空晶（他結晶に包有されたものが溶け去って空になったもの），充填(じゅうてん)仮像（空晶をみたしたもの）などがある。
