Minerals usually have a unique crystal shape determined by their crystal structure, but in exceptional cases, they may show a crystal shape unique to other minerals, which is called a pseudomorph of the original mineral. Examples of pseudomorphs include polymorphic pseudomorphs (when a polymorphic transformation occurs, such as between quartz and tridymite), replacement pseudomorphs (when the composition of a crystal changes, such as between pyrite and limonite), voids (when the contents of another crystal have dissolved and become empty), and filled pseudomorphs (when an empty crystal is filled). → Related article Serpentine Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
