Cake - ke-ki (English spelling) cake

It refers to Western-style fresh confections, fruit cakes, butter cakes, etc. In Japan, it often refers to Western-style confections in general, but in the UK and other European countries, cake often refers to a specific type of confection. It is a sponge-like confection that keeps relatively well and is made primarily from butter, sugar, eggs, flour, nuts, and dried fruit. Typical examples include plum cake, Simnel cake, Madeira cake, and pound cake. In French, it is called gâteau(x), and in German, Kuchen. The general term for confections would be confectionery or pastry, and cake is one category of these.

洋生菓子、フルーツケーキ、バターケーキなどのこと。日本では洋菓子全般をさすことが多いが、イギリスおよびヨーロッパ諸国では、cakeは特定の種類の菓子を意味することが多い。すなわち、バター、砂糖、鶏卵、小麦粉および木の実や乾燥果実などを主原料としてつくる、スポンジ状組織をした比較的日もちのよい菓子をいう。代表的なものにプラムケーキ、シムネルケーキ、マデラケーキ、パウンドケーキなどがある。フランス語ではガトーgâteau(x)、ドイツ語ではクーヘンKuchenに相当する。菓子の総称はコンフェクショナリーconfectioneryとかペイストリーpastryというべきで、ケーキはその一分野である。
