Akizuki Rebellion - Akizuki no Ran

Japanese:
Akizuki Rebellion - Akizuki no Ran

A samurai rebellion occurred in Akizuki (Asakura City), Fukuoka Prefecture, from October 26 to November 3, 1876 (Meiji 9). Former Akizuki domain samurai Miyazaki Shanosuke, Iso Jun, Imamura Hyakuhachiro and others had long advocated the expansion of national sovereignty and opposed various government policies, and had allied with the Kumamoto Keishinto Party and Maehara Issei of Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Upon hearing of the Keishinto Party's outburst (the Shinpuren Rebellion) in October 1876, Miyazaki and several hundred other samurai marched their troops to Toyots (Miyako Town) to join Maehara and others in Hagi. However, they were ambushed by soldiers from the Kokura Garrison and retreated into the mountains of Mt. Hiko, while Miyazaki and Iso demanded disbandment and committed suicide, while Imamura and 50 to 60 others continued to fight in the Akizuki region, and many were captured. This was one of the samurai rebellions that erupted in various places in opposition to the tyranny of the government officials after the collapse of the debate over the expedition to Korea in 1873 (Meiji 6) (the Meiji 6th year political uprising).
