Japanese: 人間喜劇 - にんげんきげき

The general title of Balzac's novels. It consists of 91 short and long stories written with the intention of creating a social history of 19th century France. It was planned in 1833, but including earlier works, the interim plan of 1845 was to have 143 stories. It is divided into three parts: Studies in Manners and Customs, which describes society as an aspect of human passion, Philosophical Studies, which describes individualized types, and Analytical Studies, which explores its principles. Studies in Manners is further divided into six scenes: Scenes from Private Life (Father Goriot), Scenes from Provincial Life, Scenes from Parisian Life (Cousin Pons), Scenes from Political Life, Scenes from Military Life, and Scenes from Country Life. In addition, the appearance of the same character in multiple works gives unity and depth to the Comedy Humane as a whole.

バルザックの一群の小説の総題。19世紀フランスの社会史となるようにとの意図のもとで書かれた長短91編からなる。1833年に計画されたが，それ以前の作品を含み，1845年の途中計画では143編になる予定だった。人間の情熱の諸相としての社会を描く《風俗研究》，個性化された類型を描く《哲学研究》，その原理を探究する《分析研究》の３部に分かれ，風俗研究はさらに，《私生活情景》（《ゴリオ爺(じい)さん》），《地方生活情景》，《パリ生活情景》（《従兄ポンス》），《政治生活情景》，《軍隊生活情景》，《田園生活情景》の６情景に細分される。また，同一人物を複数の作品に登場させることで《人間喜劇》全体に統一性と奥行きを与えている。
