The general title of Balzac's novels. It consists of 91 short and long stories written with the intention of creating a social history of 19th century France. It was planned in 1833, but including earlier works, the interim plan of 1845 was to have 143 stories. It is divided into three parts: Studies in Manners and Customs, which describes society as an aspect of human passion, Philosophical Studies, which describes individualized types, and Analytical Studies, which explores its principles. Studies in Manners is further divided into six scenes: Scenes from Private Life (Father Goriot), Scenes from Provincial Life, Scenes from Parisian Life (Cousin Pons), Scenes from Political Life, Scenes from Military Life, and Scenes from Country Life. In addition, the appearance of the same character in multiple works gives unity and depth to the Comedy Humane as a whole. → Related article Rougon-Macquart Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
