A species of bird in the family Bustard, or a general term for birds in the family Bustard. The great bustard (illustration) is about 100 cm long (male). Females are slightly smaller than males, but even they are as large as large geese. The head and neck are gray, the back below the spine is yellowish brown with fine white and black stripes, and the belly is white. The primary flight feathers are black, but the secondary flight feathers are mostly white. Males have white whiskers around the mouth and a brown band on the chest. They breed in the steppes of the mid-latitudes of Eurasia, and migrate to slightly warmer regions in winter. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
