An ancient Italian tribe that lived in the central inland of Latium. They are thought to be of the same ancestry as the Samnites, and the name Hernici comes from the Oscan word for "rock." They built cities such as Aretrium, Ferentinum, Verulae, and Anagnia, and around 486 BC formed an offensive and defensive alliance with Rome, which they renewed in 358 BC. They later became enemies of Rome, and were conquered by them in 306 BC. They were granted Roman citizenship and began to use Latin.
