Garments made of overlapping fabrics and finely stitched, or sashiko-ori (a floating weave with an appearance similar to sashiko). It started out as repairing parts of the original fabric by sewing or mending, but eventually parts of the fabric that were badly damaged, such as the shoulders and chest, were repaired decoratively from the beginning. Sashikogin in the Tohoku region is one example, and examples of garments with a strong decorative tendency include Toyama Kesa. The general stitching method is to use thread of the same or opposite color as the fabric, stitching along the weave of the fabric, or diagonally or in a sash direction. When the stitch density increases, the appearance is almost the same as sewn twill. Currently, it is used for work clothes, kendo uniforms, firefighter uniforms, etc. [Kadoyama Yukihiro] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
