In a jet engine (Figure 1), air is drawn in through an intake port, compressed by a compressor, and then introduced into a combustion chamber, where fuel is added and burned. The resulting high-temperature, high-pressure combustion gas passes through a turbine that drives the compressor, and is then ejected as a jet from a jet nozzle (Figure 1). The overall efficiency of a jet aircraft, that is, the proportion of the energy generated by fuel combustion that is effectively used for propulsion, is the product of the engine thermal efficiency and the propulsive efficiency.
