Ala., AL, is an agricultural and industrial state located in the center of the southern United States. The central to south and northwestern parts of the state belong to the Gulf Coast Plain, while the southern end of the Appalachian Mountains stretches to the northeast. Generally, the state is warm and rainy. Cotton and corn are the main agricultural products, and the state is also known as the "Cotton State." Livestock farming is also practiced. Blessed with iron ore and coal, it is the largest steel-producing state in the south. The black population rate is 25.3% (1990). Initially colonized by Spain and France. In 1783, it became a British territory and then a US territory. It joined the Union in 1819. In the 1950s, the civil rights movement centered around Martin Luther King Jr. developed.
