Died: July 19, 1945. Zurich. Swiss art historian. In 1893, he became a professor at the University of Basel as the successor to J. Burckhardt. He then became a professor at the universities of Berlin in 1901, Munich in 1912, and Zurich in 1924. His university entrance thesis was Renaissance and Baroque (1888). In his main work, Kunstgeschichtliche Grundbegriffe (1915) (Fundamental Concepts of Art History), he contrasted the development of styles from the Renaissance to the Baroque in terms of five basic concepts: "linear" and "pictorial", "flat" and "profound", "closed form" and "open form", "multipleness" and "unity", and "absolute clarity" and "relative clarity". His other works include Die klassische Kunst (Classical Art) (1899) and Italien und das Deutsche Form-gefühl (Formal Sentiment in Italy and Germany) (1931).

スイスの美術史家。 1893年 J.ブルクハルトの後継者としてバーゼル大学教授となる。次いで 1901年ベルリン，12年ミュンヘン，24年チューリヒの各大学教授を歴任。大学就職論文は『ルネサンスとバロック』 (1888) 。主著『美術史の基礎概念』 Kunstgeschichtliche Grundbegriffe (1915) のなかで，ルネサンスからバロックへの様式発展を「線的」と「絵画的」，「平面的」と「深奥的」，「閉じられた形式」と「開かれた形式」，「多数性」と「統一性」，「絶対的明瞭性」と「相対的明瞭性」の5つの基本概念で対比させた。その他の著作として『古典美術』 Die klassische Kunst (1899) ，『イタリアとドイツの形式感情』 Italien und das Deutsche Form-gefühl (1931) などがある。
