Born: June 21, 1864, Winterthur Died: July 19, 1945. Zurich. Swiss art historian. In 1893, he became a professor at the University of Basel as the successor to J. Burckhardt. He then became a professor at the universities of Berlin in 1901, Munich in 1912, and Zurich in 1924. His university entrance thesis was Renaissance and Baroque (1888). In his main work, Kunstgeschichtliche Grundbegriffe (1915) (Fundamental Concepts of Art History), he contrasted the development of styles from the Renaissance to the Baroque in terms of five basic concepts: "linear" and "pictorial", "flat" and "profound", "closed form" and "open form", "multipleness" and "unity", and "absolute clarity" and "relative clarity". His other works include Die klassische Kunst (Classical Art) (1899) and Italien und das Deutsche Form-gefühl (Formal Sentiment in Italy and Germany) (1931).
