Myokian - Myokian

This Zen temple is located in Oyamazaki-cho, Otokuni-gun, Kyoto Prefecture. It belongs to the Tofukuji school of the Rinzai sect and is called Toyoki-san. It is said to have been founded by Shungaku Shiho during the Meiō era (1492-1501). Shiho was a monk at Jizo-ji Temple, a branch of Tofukuji Temple, which was located at the southern foot of Mount Tenno. At the time, there were many sub-temples of the temple in the area, and Myoki-an is thought to have been founded as one of them. It is likely that the renga (linked verse) master Yamazaki Sokan took refuge at this hermitage after this. It is also said to have been founded during the Bunmei era (1469-87), but the exact date is unknown. The third head priest, Koshukushibo, was known as a tea master and was on friendly terms with Sakai tea masters such as Tsuda Sokyu and Sen no Rikyu. After the Battle of Yamazaki in June 1582 (Tensho 10), Toyotomi Hideyoshi built a castle on Mt. Tennozan, and Myoki-an was used as a "kaisho" (meeting hall) for entertaining guests within the castle grounds. During the Edo period, Myoki-an was granted 4 koku of land within the shrine grounds of Rikyu Hachimangu Shrine and 44 koku of land in Enmyoji Village, but it fell into decline at the end of the Edo period, and in the Meiji period, the temple's land was reduced due to the construction of railways and stations. The Shoin, built during the Bunmei era, is a designated Important Cultural Property, and the teahouse Tai-an is a designated National Treasure.

京都府乙訓(おとくに)郡大山崎町にある禅寺。臨済宗東福寺派に属し、豊興山と号す。明応(めいおう)年間（1492～1501）春嶽士芳(しゅんがくしほう)の開創と伝えられる。士芳は、天王山南麓(なんろく)にあった東福寺末地蔵(じぞう)寺の僧で、当時付近には同寺の塔頭(たっちゅう)が多数あり、妙喜庵もその一つとして創立されたとみられる。連歌(れんが)師山崎宗鑑(そうかん)が当庵に身を寄せたのはこれより後のことであろう。文明(ぶんめい)年間（1469～87）開創とも伝えられるが不詳。3世功叔士紡(こうしゅくしぼう)は茶人として知られ、津田宗及(そうきゅう)、千利休(せんのりきゅう)ら堺(さかい)の茶人と親交があった。1582年（天正10）6月の山崎合戦のあと、豊臣(とよとみ)秀吉は天王山に築城、妙喜庵は城下の「会所」として接客に用いられている。江戸時代の妙喜庵は、離宮八幡宮(りきゅうはちまんぐう)の社領内に4石余と円明寺村に44石を領していたが、幕末には衰微し、また明治に入っては、鉄道の敷設や駅舎の建設に伴い、寺地を削られた。書院は文明年間の建築で国の重要文化財、茶室待庵(たいあん)は国宝に指定されている。
