Steinweg was a piano manufacturer founded in New York in 1853 by Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg (1797-1871), a German immigrant to America. The company produced the grand piano (1859) and upright piano (1863), which actively adopted a single cast frame, cross-stringing, double escapement, and other features, perfecting the modern piano. Steinway pianos are now widely used around the world as the finest musical instruments. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
