A river in central South America. It is about 2,550 km long. It originates in the Mato Grosso Plateau in Brazil, flows south along the border between Paraguay and Brazil, passes through Asuncion, flows south along the border with Argentina, and empties into the Paraná River. The middle reaches are occupied by a large marshland called the Pantanal.
