One of the official languages of the Republic of South Africa. It is the native language of Dutch immigrants (Afrikaners, also known as Boers) living in southern Africa. It has about 2 million speakers. It is used in all areas of society, including literature, journalism, and academia. It developed from the language of Dutch immigrants who settled in the mid-17th century, so it is naturally very similar to Dutch. It has simple grammar and exhibits a creole character. It contains elements of Malay, Khoisan (Coin language), etc., but the proportions are not large.
