A bird of the family Secretarybird (illustration) in the order Accipitridae, which walks on the ground with long, strong legs to catch prey. This family consists of only one species, Secretarybird. It has a crest of 20 long, black feathers with tips at the back of its neck, and its English name comes from its resemblance to an 18th-century European clerk who would carry a quill pen in his ear or in his wig. It is widely distributed south of the Sahara Desert in Africa. It prefers grasslands and does not live in forests or thickly brushed savannas. It is about 120 cm long and 1 m high at the head, with males being slightly larger.

長くじょうぶな脚で地上を歩きながら獲物をつかまえるタカ目ヘビクイワシ科の鳥（イラスト）。この科はヘビクイワシ1種だけからなる。くびの後ろに長い20枚の先端の黒い冠羽があり，英名はその姿が，羽根ペンを耳にはさんだり，かつらにさしたりした18世紀ころのヨーロッパの書記官に似ていることによる。アフリカのサハラ砂漠より南に広く分布する。草原を好み，森林や，やぶの深いサバンナにはすまない。全長約120cm，頭高約1m，雄のほうがやや大きい。
