Loki - Loki (English spelling)

A god in Norse mythology. Loki was born of a race of giants, but according to the Edda, he and Odin were blood brothers. He is a trickster who plays an active role in the most colorful parts of Norse mythology, such as the Baldr myth, the story of Idun's apple of youth, and the adventures of Thor, bringing disasters to the world of the gods while also solving them. He also created sinister things such as Hel, the goddess of death, Fenrir the monster wolf, and Midgard the giant serpent, while acquiring many treasures for the gods. There are various theories about Loki, such as that he is the incarnation of fire, water, spiders, and evil, but these may also be influenced by Christianity.

北欧神話の神。ロキは巨人族の生まれであったが、『エッダ』によればオーディンと血を分けた義兄弟となる。バルドル神話やイドゥンの若返りのリンゴの話、トールとの冒険の旅の話など、北欧神話のなかでももっとも生彩のある部分に活躍し、神々の世界に災いを持ち込むと同時にその解決にもあたるというトリックスターである。また死の女神ヘルや怪狼(かいろう)フェンリル、大蛇ミドガルドなどのまがまがしいものを設ける一方で、神々のために多くの宝物を獲得する。ロキを火、水、クモ、悪の化身とするなど諸説があるが、これらはキリスト教からの影響とも考えられる。
