Chalcocite

A copper ore mineral. As a secondary copper mineral, it occurs in the oxidation zones of various copper deposits with other secondary minerals (copper sulfide and copper carbonate minerals), and rarely as a primary mineral in ultramafic rocks with other copper sulfide minerals. Its idiomorph is oblique (rectangular) plate-like to columnar. It is found in many places in Japan, but good crystals are rare, and only known occurrences include those from the Kawazu Mine (closed) on the east coast of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture. It is very similar in appearance to durrlite, chalcite, roxbyite, and aniko, and cannot be easily distinguished. Its English name comes from chalcitis, the name of a copper ore from Cyprus.

銅の鉱石鉱物の一つ。二次銅鉱物として、各種銅鉱床酸化帯中に他の二次鉱物（硫化銅や炭酸銅の鉱物）と産し、またまれに超塩基性岩中に初生鉱物として、他の硫化銅の鉱物などとともに産する。自形は斜方（直方）板状～柱状。日本でも産地は多いが、良晶は少なく、静岡県伊豆半島東岸の河津(かわづ)鉱山（閉山）産などが知られるのみである。デュルレ鉱、方輝銅鉱、ロクスビー鉱、阿仁鉱(あにこう)などと外観上酷似し、容易には識別できない。英名はキプロス島産の銅鉱の名称chalcitisに由来する。
