A dance from the region of Naples in Italy. The name is said to come from the city of Taranto in southern Italy, or from a legend that dancing this dance would cure a person bitten by a poisonous tarantula spider, but the more likely theory today is that it comes from tarantism, a dancing disease that was prevalent in Italy in the 15th and 16th centuries. The dance is similar to the saltarello and tresca, and is performed by two or three people in a lively manner with vigorous leaps and stomps. The music is in 6/8 time. It has been used in ballets, most notably A. Bournonville's Napoli (1842), and in the third act of Swan Lake.
