A general term for birds belonging to the Anhingidae family of the Pelecaniformes. In English, it is called darter, and in American English, anhinga. In taxonomy, the Anhinga is very closely related to the Cormorant, and is often classified in the Cormorant family. There is one genus and two species that inhabit the tropical regions of both the Old and New Worlds and the Southern Hemisphere. Total length is 85-90 cm. Its plumage is generally black with white patterns on its back. Its body shape is similar to that of a Cormorant, but it is more slender than the Cormorant, especially its neck. Anatomically, it is characterized by the joints of its cervical vertebrae. The name Anhinga comes from the fact that it swims with most of its body submerged in water and its long, curved neck sticking out, reminiscent of a snake.
