The capital of Vestmanland county in central-eastern Sweden. Located on Lake Mälaren, it is Sweden's largest inland port. It was the site of the 1527 Diet, which formally introduced Protestantism to Sweden, and the 1544 Diet, which passed a resolution establishing the hereditary right of the Vasa dynasty to the throne. It is the center of the electrical industry. It produces machinery, glass, and metal products, and exports iron ore, timber, and other products. It has a Gothic cathedral built in the 12th century.
