An oil field area in the northern part of Alaska, USA. A tundra region stretching from east to west between the Brooks Range and the Arctic Ocean, with the Coalville River flowing north. Oil development has been progressing since oil was discovered there in 1968. Centered in Prudhoe Bay, the area has an estimated crude oil reserve of 1.6 trillion liters. A highway runs from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay. A pipeline stretches 1,300 km to Valdez on the coast of the Gulf of Alaska.
