German Romance language scholar and critic. His real name was Curtius. He was born in Alsace and died in Rome. He served as professor at Bonn, Princeton and other universities. His works include Pioneers of Modern French Literature (1919), Balzac (1923), and the pioneering work on Mannerism and topos theory, European Literature and the Latin Middle Ages (1948).
