A group of islands off the northwestern coast of Norway, near latitude 69° north, with a narrow coastal plain separated by glacial peaks (the highest being 1,266 m). Approximately 35,000 people live in an area of 2,368 km2, and are primarily engaged in cod fishing and agriculture. The islands are connected by bridges and ferries, and ferry services to the west coast call at three ports. There is a military airport on Andøya, an island in the north, and mesozoic layers of the same age as the seafloor oil-bearing layers are distributed fragmentarily. Oil exploration began on the northwestern continental shelf in 1981, and several gas fields have already been discovered. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
