The umbilical cord is called a true knot when it is knotted, and a pseudoknot when it appears to be knotty due to the twisting of collagen or blood vessels. In reptiles and birds, the part of the embryo that connects to the yolk sac and other parts of the embryonic body is also called the umbilical cord.
