A city in the western part of Saga Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies the Takeo Basin and the surrounding hills. The city center is blessed with boat traffic on the Rokkaku River, and developed as a post station on the Nagasaki Road and as a hot spring resort of Takeo Onsen (simple spring, 46-51°C). It is a transportation hub with the Sasebo Line, Nagasaki Expressway, and Nishi Kyushu Expressway passing through it. Rice is grown on the plains, and mandarin oranges and tea are cultivated in the foothills. Livestock is also raised. Industry is sluggish with many small businesses, but in recent years there has been an increase in companies being attracted to industrial parks in the north. There is a Hizen pottery kiln site (historic site). In March 2006, Kitakata Town and Yamauchi Town in Kishima County were incorporated. 195.40 km2 . 50,699 people (2010). 佐賀県西部の市。1954年市制。武雄盆地と周辺の丘陵地を占める。中心市街は六角川の舟運に恵まれ,長崎路の宿駅,武雄温泉(単純泉,46〜51℃)の温泉場として発展。佐世保線,長崎自動車道,西九州自動車道が通じる交通要地。平地では米作,山麓ではミカンや茶の栽培が盛ん。畜産も行われる。工業は零細企業が多く不振であるが,近年は北部の工業団地への企業誘致が進む。肥前陶器窯跡(史跡)がある。2006年3月杵島郡北方町,山内町を編入。195.40km2。5万699人(2010)。
