A city in the Marche region in central Italy. Population 90,340 (1990). A commercial city facing the Adriatic Sea, it is a popular beach destination in the summer. During ancient Roman times, it was already well developed administratively and economically. In 754, Pesaro was recaptured by the Frankish king Pepin from the Lombard king Astolfo and was one of the five cities (Pentapolis) that were donated to the Pope. During the Renaissance, the town's political power was taken over by the Sforza family and then the Della Rovere family, but it returned to the Papal States in 1631.
