1611‐71 One of the leading Western classical scholars of the 17th century. Born in Hamburg, he studied at the universities of Leipzig, Jena, Leiden, and Groningen, after which he traveled to France, Italy, and England, where he had direct contact with many manuscripts. He became the successor of his teacher Heinsius at Leiden University, and revised and published many ancient Roman classics.
