一般に綱を意味し、英語のロープにあたるが、とくに登山で岩壁や氷壁を登攀(とうはん)するときに安全のために体を結び合い、確保や懸垂など登攀の補助のために用いる綱をいう。材料には以前はマニラ麻や大麻が用いられ、1950年ころからナイロン、ビニロンのものが多くなったが、これらの合成繊維の強度への過信から事故が続き一時社会問題にまでなった。構造的にも「撚(よ)りザイル」から「編みザイル」に変遷してきた。直径は8～11ミリメートルで、これ以下は補助用である。長さは30～40メートルのものが多く、これを結び合って2～3人がパーティーを組んで行動する。ザイルは岩角などで摩擦すると切断したりするから、ザイルを用いるときには多くの結び方や各種の技術、用法に十分熟達したうえでなければ危険である。
