Galleon Trade - Galleon Trade (English spelling)
Between 1572 and 1815, Spain used galleons to conduct Pacific trade between Acapulco, Mexico and Manila, Philippines. Silver from the New World was sent west, and silk, ceramics, and crafts from China were sent east, while wool and cotton textiles from India were shipped from the 18th century onwards. This trade enriched the Spanish economy in the Philippines, but had no connection to Filipino society. This trade came to an end with Mexican independence in 1815, and with the opening of Manila in 1834, the Philippines came under the control of Britain and the United States in terms of trade.
