One of the Gosankyo (three branches of the Tokugawa clan). Its founder was Munetake, the second son of the eighth shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune. Munetake was known as a scholar of Japanese classics and a poet, but in 1729 (Kyoho 14), he took the surname Tokugawa, and the following year was given a mansion within the Tayasu Gate of Edo Castle, which he called Tayasu Yakata, and so the family was named after him. In 1746 (Enkyo 3), he was given a fief of 100,000 koku and was treated as a member of the shogun's family. Although there was a period of interruption, the family continued for seven generations, including Haruaki, Narimasa, Naritaka, Yoshiyori, Juchiyo, and Kamenosuke. During the Meiji Restoration, Kamenosuke (later Iesato) inherited the old Shogunate, and Yoshiyori again took over as head of the family and became a clan leader.
