Osmium tetroxide - Chaosmium tetroxide

OsO ₄ (254.22). Also called osmium oxide (VIII) or anhydrous osmic acid. It is obtained by reacting osmium powder with oxygen or by oxidizing osmium compounds with an oxidizing agent. It is a colorless, transparent crystal. Melting point: 40.6 °C, boiling point: 131.2 °C. It is used to separate osmium from other elements due to its volatility. Soluble in water, ethanol, ether, and carbon tetrachloride. It is a strong oxidizing agent. When an alkali hydroxide is added in the presence of a reducing agent, it produces osmates. It is used as an oxidizing agent in organic synthesis, as a catalyst, and as a stain for photography and biomicroscopy. Its vapors are harmful to mucous membranes, eyes, and respiratory tract. OsO₄(254.22)．酸化オスミウム(Ⅷ)，無水オスミン酸ともいう．オスミウムの粉末を酸素と反応させるか，オスミウム化合物を酸化剤で酸化すると得られる．無色透明の結晶．融点40.6 ℃，沸点131.2 ℃．揮発性を利用してオスミウムをほかの元素と分離するのに利用される．水，エタノール，エーテル，四塩化炭素に可溶．強力な酸化剤．還元剤の存在下で水酸化アルカリを加えると，オスミウム酸塩を生成する．有機合成の酸化剤，触媒，写真，生体顕微鏡検査の染色剤などに用いられる．蒸気は粘膜をおかし，眼，呼吸器に有害である．[CAS 20816-12-0]
