A Turkish mystical sect. Its founder, Ḥājji Bektāsh (?-c. 1337), is said to have arrived in Anatolia from Khorasan in the 12th century, but the sect's organization took place over a century from the beginning of the 15th century. In the second half of the 15th century, it joined the Janissary corps and maintained exclusive privileges in terms of education and military service on the battlefield. The sect was persecuted when Mahmud II wiped out the Janissaries in 1826, but it regained its influence and played a part in the modern popular literature movement.
