[Establishment of French-style gardens]
Italian gardens had a great impact on European countries, and their vocabulary was exported north of the Alps, but eventually a movement towards a new style began to appear in France. First, Claude Mollet (c. 1563-c. 1650), who was born into a family of court landscapers, developed embroidered flowerbeds in the late 16th century, in which embroidered patterns were copied onto hedges. Then, in the 17th century, A. Le Nôtre introduced strong axes to gardens that, unlike those in Italy, were primarily built on flat land and had a geometrical structure, completing a grand style befitting the splendor of the Bourbon dynasty. This is what is generally called the "French style (formal) garden." He defined the main part of the garden with a bosquet, and then arranged embroidered flowerbeds and large fountains in an orderly manner, creating a line of sight that stretched to infinity.
