Emperor Gao (English spelling)
427‐482
Founder of the Southern Qi dynasty in China. Reigned 479-482. His given name was Xiao Daocheng, and his temple name was Taizu. He was originally from Lanling County, and is said to be the 24th generation grandson of Xiao He. He was from a family of Hanmen who migrated south to Wujin County, Jinling County (Jiangsu Province) during the Yongjia Rebellion. He was of the same clan as Xiao Sif, a relative of Emperor Wu of Song, and distinguished himself by serving under him in the subjugation of barbarians. In 467 (the third year of the Taishi era), he moved to Huaiyin (Anhui Province), a base on the front lines against the Northern Wei, and rallied the local powerful families to become a major military faction. With the recommendation of the noble Chu Yuan, he took control of the Imperial Guard and participated in national politics, and put down two imperial rebellions, solidifying his position as the most powerful man in the dynasty.
