A term used to describe the state of being sensitive to bright light, squinting to avoid it, and in severe cases, tears and eye pain. Photophobia, a symptom of eye disease, refers to the inability to keep one's eyes open due to painful discomfort even when exposed to light that would not be dazzling to a healthy person, and is often seen when there is irritation from disease or foreign matter in the anterior part of the eye. It can also occur with congenital albinism, color vision deficiency (monochromatopsia), keratitis, iritis, lens disease, or irregular eyelashes, and can sometimes also be caused by conjunctivitis, retinal or optic nerve disease, or with autonomic nervous system abnormalities. Treatment of the underlying disease is the first priority, but symptomatic treatment can involve topical anesthetic eye drops for conjunctival or corneal diseases, and sunglasses can be used to reduce the subjective symptoms.
