A kana zoshi author from the Edo period. His given name was Shigemasa, and he was called Gorozaemon. Joshin was his Buddhist name. He was a samurai who served Hojo Ujimasa of Odawara, and experienced the siege of Odawara in 1590. After the downfall of the Hojo clan, he became a merchant in Edo, and later converted to the monk Tenkai. He wrote down what he saw and heard during his time as a ronin in Edo, in the Keicho Kenbunshu, which contains over 130 entries. Joshin also wrote other works, such as Hojo Godaiki, which focuses on stories related to the Hojo clan, and Sozoro Monogatari, a collection of stories related to courtesans (both published in 1641). Both are valuable sources.
