A city in the central state of Andhra Pradesh in southern India. Population 120,000 (1991). Known for the discovery of a large number of ancient Roman gold coins. The city is named after Nandi (the white bull that was the vehicle of the god Shiva). It is located in the low mountain area west of the Nallamalla Range in the Eastern Ghats, facing the Kundera River, a tributary of the Penner River. It is on the transportation route from the Coromandel Coast to the northeastern Deccan Plateau, and in 1932 a large number of Roman gold coins dating to the 1st and 2nd centuries were excavated there.
