Hectare - Hectare (English spelling)

A unit of area in the metric system. It is 100 ares, or 10,000 square meters. The symbol is ha. It is used as a non-SI unit in conjunction with the SI. It is used exclusively for land. Land area is usually difficult to change to a new unit, but in Japan, 1 chobu in the shakkanho system is about 0.99 hectares and can be considered to be the same in practice, so it spread without much resistance.

メートル法の面積の単位。100アール、つまり1万平方メートルである。記号はha。SIと併用される非SI単位として使われている。もっぱら土地に用いられる。土地面積は、通常、新しい単位に変更するのが困難なものであるが、日本では尺貫法の1町歩が約0.99ヘクタールで実際上同一とみなせるので、大きな抵抗なしに普及した。
