...Its predecessor was the court orchestra founded in 1882, and after the revolution in 1921 it took on its current structure, calling itself the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, but was renamed in 1991. The first conductor after the revolution was Emil' Al'bertovich Kuper (1877-1960), and the orchestra changed conductors several times after that, but from 1938 EA Mravinsky became the music director and chief conductor, and trained the orchestra into one of the world's leading orchestras. Perhaps reflecting the city of St. Petersburg (Leningrad), the orchestra's performances are Western-style, heavy and precise. ...
