Sterne, Laurence
Born: 24 November 1713, Clonmel
[Died] March 18, 1768. London. British novelist. Graduated from Cambridge University and became a priest, but gained instant fame with his novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman (1760-67). This unconventional novel has no plot and the main character, Tristram, only appears halfway through the work, and was highly praised in the 20th century, stimulating new novelistic techniques. He later published A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy (68), which is based on a continental trip he undertook while recuperating from tuberculosis, as well as a collection of sermons.
