Pervigilium Veneris - Venus's Night Song

A Roman poem of unknown authorship from the 3rd or 4th century. It consists of 93 lines and is a hymn dedicated to the spring festival of the Sicilian goddess Venus, the "mother of all things." A voice filled with longing for spring and various associations with spring appear on repeated phrases in the style of folk music. Rhymes are used here and there, indicating the period when Latin poetry was shifting to stress and soft accents.

3～4世紀頃のローマの作者未詳の詩。 93行から成り，シチリアの「万物の生みの親」ウェヌス女神の春の祭りに捧げられた賛歌。春を呼ぶ憧憬に満ちた声と，さまざまな春の連想が，民謡調の反復句に乗って現れる。ところどころに脚韻が使われて，ラテン語詩が強弱アクセントに移り変る時期を示している。
