Pervigilium Veneris - Venus's Night Song
A Roman poem of unknown authorship from the 3rd or 4th century. It consists of 93 lines and is a hymn dedicated to the spring festival of the Sicilian goddess Venus, the "mother of all things." A voice filled with longing for spring and various associations with spring appear on repeated phrases in the style of folk music. Rhymes are used here and there, indicating the period when Latin poetry was shifting to stress and soft accents.
