Mazatlán (English spelling)

A city in the southern part of the state of Sinaloa in western Mexico. It is a port city located on the east coast near the mouth of the Gulf of California, on a promontory overlooking the Bay of Olas Atlas. The port is the largest on the Pacific coast of Mexico, and ships ore, leather, tobacco, textile materials, bananas, shrimp, etc. It is also a commercial and industrial center, distributing and processing sugar cane, tobacco, cotton, fruit, etc. from the surrounding agricultural areas. The coast has beautiful sandy beaches, and fishing and hunting are also enjoyed, making it a popular seaside resort. A major road and railway run from the border town of Nogales with the United States to Mexico City. A ferry also runs between La Paz, at the tip of the Baja California Peninsula, and it is the base of communication with the mainland of the peninsula. Population: 314,249 (1990 estimate).

メキシコ西部，シナロア州南部の都市。カリフォルニア湾湾口付近の東岸に位置する港湾都市で，オラスアトラス湾を見おろす岬にある。港はメキシコの太平洋側最大の港湾で，鉱石，皮革，タバコ，繊維原料，バナナ，エビなどを積出す。商工業中心地でもあり，周辺の農業地帯に産するサトウキビ，タバコ，綿花，果実などを集散，加工する。沿岸には美しい砂浜海岸があり，魚釣りや狩猟も楽しめるため，大衆的な海浜保養地となっている。アメリカ合衆国との国境の町ノガレスからメキシコ市へ通じる幹線道路，鉄道が通る。またバハカリフォルニア半島先端部のラパスとの間にフェリーが就航し，同半島の本土との連絡基点となっている。人口 31万 4249 (1990推計) 。
