The presidential election in February 1986 attracted international attention. Amidst the chaotic vote counting process, Marcos was declared the winner, but the situation changed dramatically when Defense Minister Enrile and Deputy Chief of Staff Ramos, who were backed by military reformists, rose up in support of the unified opposition candidate, Corazon Aquino (wife of the late Senator Aquino). With the church supporting the rebels and the general public providing a strong shield to defend them, the US government took the initiative to settle the situation and sent Marcos into exile in Hawaii.
