Universal City was founded in 1815 as a film studio in the San Fernando Valley, and is now the capital of Hollywood. ... Thus, the early Universal was thriving with Erich von Stroheim's early directorial works, "The Wind in the Sky" (1918), "The Devil's Key" (1920), "The Foolish Wife" (1921), as well as films starring popular western star Harry Carey (1878-1947) ("Ghost Horseman" (1918), "The Bloody Flame" and "The Rush of the Wind" (both 1921), directed by John Ford, and legendary handsome star Rudolph Valentino in "The Eagle" (1925) and "The Great Desert" (1926). Irving Thalberg, who would later be called the "child prodigy" of MGM, and Harry Cohn (1891-1958), who would later control Columbia, were producers who made their name as Laemmle's secretary.
