Iga is an old city located in the Ueno Basin in the north-central part of Mie Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1941. The central city area was the castle town of the Todo clan during the Edo period, and still retains its neat, orderly grid-like layout. It is also famous as the birthplace of Iga-ryu ninjutsu and the birthplace of Matsuo Basho. Since the Meiji period, it has been off the main transportation network and has been a rural area, but industrialization has progressed since the opening of the Meihan National Highway in 1965. Specialties include braided cords, Iga ware, and cotton, and Iga rice and sake are also produced in abundance. The Kansai Main Line runs through the north, and the Kintetsu Iga Line runs through the city. In November 2004, it merged with Aoyama Town in Naga District, Iga Town in Ayama District, Ayama Town, Oyamada Village, and Shimagahara Village to become a city. It has an area of 195.26 km2 and a population of 59,417 (2003). → Related article Ueno Basin Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
