This is a method of igniting an oil reservoir while pumping air from the surface, burning part of the oil in the reservoir, and facilitating the movement of the oil from the reservoir to the well by increasing the temperature and pressure of the reservoir. This is an effective method for extracting oil from high-viscosity oil reservoirs and oil sands. There is also a wet combustion method in which water is injected simultaneously with or alternately with air to improve the efficiency of the sweep.
