A village in Takashima County, northwest of Shiga Prefecture. Population 2,603 (1995). It borders Kyoto Prefecture to the west and Fukui Prefecture to the north. It is surrounded by mountain ranges with altitudes of 450 to 900 meters in the northern part of the Hira Mountains and the eastern part of the Tamba Highlands, and settlements are scattered in the basins of the Azumi River, Harihata River, Kita River, and Aso River, which flow north along the Hanaore Fault. It is a mountain village in a valley where 90% of the town area is covered by forests, and it has long supplied timber to Kyoto. In recent years, forestry production has been sluggish. Charcoal production, which was once thriving, has almost completely disappeared, and shiitake mushroom cultivation is carried out as a side job to small-scale rice farming.
